Health Advisory

Re: Chickenpox (Varicella)

In the months of October and November last year the medical clinic noted an increased incidence of chickenpox or “bulutong-tubig” among our students. As such, an advisory was issued last October 13, 2011 on this illness as part of the school’s disease prevention and health information. For the month of December the incidence decreased to two students affected and for this month (January 2012) one student already had the disease.

To reiterate, acute varicella infection or “bulutong tubig” is a highly contagious disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV) and is acquired by direct contact with a patient having the same illness (primary infection) or with herpes zoster (secondary infection). This usually affects children 5-10 years of age but occurs in any age. The period of communicability starts 1-2 days before the onset of rashes and lasts until all the lesions have become encrusted. Incubation period is from 1 to 3 weeks.

The signs and symptoms include: fever, headache, body malaise, muscle and joint pains as well as other flu-like manifestations. There is a characteristic itchy rash which starts as reddish areas progressing to papules and vesicles that eventually crusts. These lesions usually start in the trunk and spread to include the face and extremities. Crusts eventually fall off in 1 to 2 weeks, longer in those with low immune respons

Complications are not common but may occur and include: secondary bacterial skin infections, otitis media, pneumonia, Reye’s syndrome, and encephalitis/meningitis.

Treatment consists of paracetamol for fever, antihistamines for itchiness and antiviral tablets. The infected person should be kept in isolation during the acute phase to avoid spread of the disease. This usually lasts for two weeks.

The best prevention is through vaccination and good personal hygiene. For those who have been vaccinated in childhood (one dose) a booster shot is recommended and for those who have not receive the vaccine two doses at a minimum of 4 weeks interval is recommended.

To protect other members of the community, the school follows the two week isolation period. Avoiding contact with infected persons is advised especially for those who are or might be pregnant.
